Mark Shea on the claim that the Church's stance on condoms is leading to the spread of AIDS:
"Because, of course, what is uppermost in the mind of every fornicator is the Teaching of the Magisterium"

Visit to the Blessed Sacrament
Sweet savior Jesus hidden in the Blessed Eucharist
Keeping before us, the ineffable presence of your Sacred
Heart, We adore you, We love you.
Oh sweet savior Jesus from this humble tabernacle
which you chose for your dwelling place- this altar
where you are immolated.
Listen, we beseech you, to our offering of reparation.
|
For the wanderings of our minds during the mysteries
For want of preparation for the receiving of this
sacrament of Your divine love.
For our luke warm thanksgiving
For our coldness at the foot of your altar
For the sins we have caused, the bad example
we've given
For all the sins of our past life
For our sins of sensuality and pride
For the blasphemies committed against you and
your immaculate mother.
For outrages committed by those who should console
your Sacred Heart.
|
Oh love forsaken, goodness unknown, would that I could
offer you an act of reparation equal to the benefits received,
but I am nothing but misery and sin and I can only sigh
and weep at your feet. Accept then, the transports of
love and your Holy angels the expiation of the saints
and the prayers of fervent souls.
Give us we implore you: Sorrow for our sins, humility,
confidence and love. Be thou our all powerful
reparation to the Holy trinity, our life, our happiness
and our hope- here, below.
Our hope of everlasting happiness in heaven and our hope
here below.

Amen.

The Myth of Hitler's Pope by Rabbi David G. Dalin
I recently had the pleasure of reading this book by Rabbi David Dalin, in which he attacks the recent slander on Pope Pius XII and his work, or lack thereof, during the Holocaust. Dalin refutes the claims of John Cornwell, Garry Willis, and Daniel Goldhagen (just to name a few), who claim that Pope Pius XII was “Hitler’s Pope”, a virulent anti-Semitic who watched idly as millions of Jews were murdered. Dalin debunks their faulty scholarship, building a strong case for Pope Pius XII’s recognition as a “righteous gentile”. He makes many points, including:
|
›Contrary to critics who accuse Pius XII of being silent, he took a firm and public stand against anti-Semitism in Nazi Germany when he felt it would be beneficial. Take for example, the New York Times on the Pope’s 1941 Christmas address:
“The voice of Pius XII is a lonely voice in the silence and darkness enveloping Europe this Christmas… In calling for a “real new order” based on “liberty, justice, and love”… the pope put himself squarely against Hitlerism.”
›Pope Pius XII’s quick work in saving 85% of Italy’s 40,000 Jews
›The Nazi plot to kidnap the Pope
›The sheltering of 3000 Jews at Castel Gandolfo, the Pope’s summer residence
›The many statements by notable Catholics who saved Jews from the Nazis (many now recognized as “righteous gentiles” by Yad Vashem) that they were acting on the direct orders of Pope Pius
›The outpouring of post-war praise for the Pope by many notable Jews (including Albert Einstein, Moshe Sharett, Israel’s first foreign minister, and Rabbi Isaac Herzog, the chief rabbi of Israel) for his work in saving Jewish men and women during the war
|
Dalin continues by identifying the grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Amin al-Husseini, not the Pope, as the one who supported Hitler throughout his “final solution”, and exposes contemporary attacks on Pope Pius XII as cleverly disguised liberal attacks on the Church by those who are not happy with the Church and her conservative stance on morality.
Simply put, this is a must-read by all, well written and accessible, important in a time when the Catholic Church is moving closer and closer to the canonization of Pope Pius XII.
